We offer an exclusive catalogue of typefaces, available for desktop, webfont selfhosting and mobile app licensing—you can find all the necessary details here.

Desktop License

Our ‘Desktop License’ grants you the right to install and use our font(s) on a predetermined number of workstations and a defined number of entities or company locations for design and/or desktop publishing purposes. All fonts purchased through our license will be delivered in OpenType format (postscript flavoured) and are optimised for standard graphic design applications like Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, QuarkXPress, etc. This license grants perpetual rights of use and may not be used outside of their specified usage parameters, or shared with other entities, companies or third parties.

About Our License Agreements

Digital typefaces or ‘fonts’ are considered software; like most software, a license is required for the use of any font on any computer or website. This license defines how a specific font can be used. In short, when you purchase one of our fonts, you are buying the right to use the particular font but not the actual software. You become a licensee, not an ‘owner’ of the font. An ‘end user license agreement’ is a contract between the licensee (you) and the licensor (Milieu Grotesque). By installing Milieu Grotesque fonts, you automatically agree to the Milieu Grotesque end user license agreement.

When you order Milieu Grotesque fonts, you are purchasing a license to use the respective typeface(s). You should be aware that the license grants you specific rights, but also covers restrictions related to how the font may be used (please study our license terms carefully). Here are the key facts covered by our agreements:

Webfont Selfhosting License

Our ‘Webfont Selfhosting License’ is tied to an assigned domain/URL and restricted to a maximum number of monthly page views and grants you full control over your server’s performance – without any monthly or annual subscription fees. This license covers the installation of our font(s) on web servers using @font-face rules in CSS. Our web font files have been manually hinted for improved rendering on various browsers. You will receive your chosen font in two web open font formats (suffix .woff and .woff2). Alternative formats and individual subsetting are available on request for an additional fee. Please note: This license determines that you take reasonable measures against hotlinking and direct access to font files. Furthermore, any modifications or font file conversions are strictly prohibited. This license grants perpetual rights of use and may not be used outside of their specified usage parameters, or shared with other entities, companies or third parties.

Mobile App License

Our ‘Mobile App License’ applies to a single stated software title and may only be used on apps specifically developed to run on mobile devices, to render text on the fly. Prices are calculated per (app) title, irrespective of the mobile operating system (e.g. Apple’s iOS, Google’s Android, or Microsoft’s Windows Mobile). This license is perpetual, with a one-time fee for use within the limits of the license. This license grants perpetual rights of use and may not be used outside of their specified usage parameters, or shared with other entities, companies or third parties.

Trial License

We provide trial versions of our fonts with a limited character set for testing purposes only. Please note: You may install and use the font software for test purposes only. Our ‘Trial License’ expressly prohibits using the font for any commercial or publishing purposes whatsoever. Please ensure that you only install this software on a single computer that is your private property and used by you only. Respect copyright! These trial versions are available for download at the top right of the chosen font’s webpage. Simply select ‘Get Trial’ and follow the instructions to receive an email with a download link to the font files.

Other / Bespoke Licenses

In addition to these three license models, we also offer bespoke licenses to cover a variety of applications and uses. These are alternative to the standard options listed above. For example: embedding licenses for e-books, computer hardware embedding (OEM) licenses, broadcasting licenses, student and educational licenses or more extensive multi- and corporate (unlimited) licenses. Please contact us with your project details for more information and a quote.

Troubleshooting PayPal payments

General, Ordering, Show All

If you are not redirected to PayPal, your browser’s cookies might be corrupted; try deleting your cookies. In other cases, firewalls may block browser redirections—please check your firewall settings and enable redirections.

If PayPal declines your payment, please double-check that the data you have provided is indeed correct. Alternatively, you might already have a (long-forgotten) PayPal account associated with your details—in this case you will need to complete the transaction by logging into your pre-existing PayPal account.

If you have trouble locating the ‘Don’t have a PayPal account?’ option, this may be due to geographic restrictions. In some cases, PayPal assumes from your browser’s cookies that you already have a PayPal account. Try clearing your cookies. Please be aware that in some cases and in some countries, PayPal does not offer the option of direct credit card payments.

For more complex issues, please consult PayPal support directly.

VAT, taxes and invoices

General, Ordering, Show All

Our sales receipt email—the email featuring the download link to your order—also contains a link to your full invoice which includes the order details and all necessary tax information. Your license/invoice may also entitle you to future upgrades, so please print this document and keep it safe for your future reference.

In line with Portuguese law, we are obliged to charge all customers based in Portugal, and all customers residing within the European Union that are without a valid VAT number, an additional 23% value-added tax (VAT) on all orders (this will be added during checkout). Clients outside of the European Union are not liable to pay value-added tax (VAT).

Refunds and exchange of fonts

General, Ordering, Desktop Fonts, Web Fonts, Mobile App Fonts, Show All

All font purchases are final. Fonts cannot be returned, refunded or exchanged—this is due the nature of software—as it is impossible to verify that copies have not been retained. If the font software is defective, it will be replaced by a revised version of the identical software, as long as it is accompanied by a receipt and we are notified within 30 days of purchase.

Refunds and returns of physical goods

General, Ordering, Products, Show All

Should our delivery not meet your expectations, physical items may be returned within 14 days of receipt for an exchange or refund. Please note that products must be returned unused and that return shipping costs are to be borne by you. Before returning any items, please contact us stating your name and order number, so we can process your returned items as conveniently as possible.

Please understand that you are responsible for the goods until they reach us. We therefore recommend the use of a traceable shipping service and where possible, please send us the tracking details, along with your order number, to ensure the goods are returned securely. If a returned item is shipped internationally, please clearly mark the packaging as ‘Returned Goods’ to avoid any customs charges. Milieu Grotesque cannot take responsibility for any returns that go missing or any charges imposed by customs.

Once your return has been received by us, we will either replace the item or refund your purchase within the next working day. Please note that this returns policy does not comply to custom made items, digital goods (fonts) and sealed printed matter (unless they are deemed to be faulty).

Additional licensing options

Licensing, Ordering, Desktop Fonts, Web Fonts, Mobile App Fonts, Trial Fonts, Show All

Should the need arise, we also issue bespoke licenses to cover a variety of applications and uses in addition to our three basic license models. Examples include licenses for:

Please contact us with your project details for more information and a quote.

Discounts, student fees and educational rates

Licensing, Ordering, Desktop Fonts, Web Fonts, Mobile App Fonts, Trial Fonts, Show All

Our ‘Desktop License’ is available at special educational rates for students and institutions when more than 25 licenses are purchased. Enquiries should be made by official teaching staff—we will be happy to send you a tailored quote. Students are welcome to use our trials in non-commercial educational projects.

Unfortunately, due to administrative requirements, we cannot process requests from individual students or offer discounts on our other licensing options.

Sharing licenses (e.g. with a collaborator)

Licensing, Desktop Fonts, Web Fonts, Mobile App Fonts, Trial Fonts, Show All

Licenses may not be shared, nor may font files be passed on to any third party including clients and contractors. Each company or individual must obtain their own license for the fonts they are using. For example, if an agency collaborates with a client, freelancer or other contractor on a design project, each legal entity (agency, client, freelancer, contractor, etc.) must obtain its own license.

(Private) modifications and conversions

Licensing, Technical, Desktop Fonts, Web Fonts, Mobile App Fonts, Trial Fonts, Show All

Please be aware that any modifications made to any Milieu Grotesque font, whether directly or via a third party, are strictly prohibited and require prior written consent from Milieu Grotesque. All modified fonts are subject to the same licensing terms and agreements as non-modified fonts.

The conversion of any of our fonts using online web font converters (i.e. Font Squirrel) and the use of any other web font related technologies—including Flash embedding—is also strictly forbidden. Please refer to our end user license agreements (EULA) at our downloads-page for further details.

Font updates and upgrades

General, Licensing, Ordering, Desktop Fonts, Web Fonts, Mobile App Fonts, Trial Fonts, Show All

If you would like to upgrade and/or expand your previously purchased license to a complete font family (either to include a larger number of users and/or to extend its scope of use) you may benefit from our font-family bundle price offers—we will deduct the price of your original order from your new purchase. Please place your desired order in the normal way and then email us both your original and your new order numbers. We will refund the difference within the next working day.

We are regularly updating and enhancing our typeface releases. If not stated otherwise, all purchased Milieu Grotesque fonts/licenses can be updated at no additional cost. Just contact us with your order number and we will send you an updated download link.

Provision of full trial versions (including digits, etc.)

Licensing, Trial Fonts, Show All

Font software trials are limited by nature and we understand that this sometimes can make it hard to realise the extent of a font’s language support. With this in mind, we have made it possible to fully experience the fonts online. Please feel free to try the full version of any Milieu Grotesque typeface on our website.

If you wish to test our typefaces more extensively in your layouts and/or give your client a full preview, we recommend purchasing one style or weight of your chosen font with a single user license for 99.– EUR.

Should you like what you see—and wish to expand your selection to a complete font-family and/or a larger number of users or broader scope of use—you will benefit from our bundle font-family price offers. We will gladly refund you the price of your original order against the price of your new purchase. For more information on this subject, please read our ‘Font updates and upgrades’ section on our ‘FAQs’ page.

Please understand that we cannot make exceptions to the above or provide full trial versions.

Desktop font installation (OTF files only)

Technical, Desktop Fonts, Trial Fonts, Show All

Please refer to the corresponding support page of your operating system and please note that we are only able to guarantee you an error-free performance if our fonts are directly installed at ‘user/Library/Fonts’ on Mac OS or the Fonts folder in Windows.

Troubleshooting fonts / technical support

Technical, Desktop Fonts, Trial Fonts, Show All

Before contacting us for assistance, we kindly request you to consider the following:

Are you still having trouble and have tried all the above options? if so, please contact us with the following information and we will do our best to offer you support:

Font validation error with Apple’s Font Book

Technical, Desktop Fonts, Trial Fonts, Show All

Subsequent to the release of Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) it has become apparent that there may be an ongoing bug with the font managing software ‘Font Book’—the software reports an error (font validation warning) when trying to install a third party font. If you encounter this error message, please check the following:

Please note that all Milieu Grotesque fonts are mastered carefully and have been tested along various OS systems. Due its well-proven technology, it’s quite unlikely that the trouble is within the font software.

Language support and OpenType features

Technical, Desktop Fonts, Web Fonts, Mobile App Fonts, Trial Fonts, Show All

While most of our fonts have an extended variety of glyphs, some are more extensive than others, all of them contain at least the standard Western character set and a variety of OpenType features.

OpenType features are supported by applications like Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, QuarkXPress and Microsoft Office. Our fonts are optimised for optimal performance with default OT features enabled (ligatures / contextual alternates).

To find out about the exact specifications of each font, please visit the font’s webpage.

Microsoft Office and Windows

Technical, Desktop Fonts, Trial Fonts, Show All

Although we have gone to great lengths to create fonts that perform perfectly across various working and software environments, this can be impossible to achieve with a fix-all solution. There are several reasons for this, the most critical being that many software vendors do not provide reliable (naming) standards.

With this in mind, we strongly recommend testing our trial versions before you purchase an official license. Should you run into any issues with our trial, please get in touch with us—we will do our best to find a solution. Please understand that due to the nature of software, fonts are not refundable (see above for more information on this topic).

If you plan to use our fonts with Microsoft products, please note that we do not style-link our fonts by default. For instance, activating the ‘B’ (Bold) or ‘I’ (Italic) button in an Office document may generate faux bold and/or italic styles.

Please also be aware that all Microsoft font rendering is routed within TrueType hinting. When you purchase a Milieu Grotesque desktop license, you receive a post-script flavoured (hinted) OpenType font, which may result in slight display inaccuracies at smaller point sizes. On request—and for an additional fee—we can supply you with manual TrueType hinted fonts.

Implementing web fonts with @font-face rule

Technical, Web Fonts, Show All

Implementing web fonts with @font-face rule is easy and you will find plenty of information regarding this subject on the internet. However, we have set up a small PDF guide to accompany every web font order which is also available in our download centre. Please note that this is a rough guide, and may not be always be immediately up-to-date with the accelerating progress of modern technology.

Calculating pageviews per month

Technical, Web Fonts, Show All

A ‘pageview’ is a request to load a web page and is counted whenever a visitor loads one of your web pages inside a browser, meaning one person loading one web page. During a website visit (session), a typical visitor may view several pages, increasing the count each time. Pageviews or website traffic can be measured using your internet service provider and/or with tools such as Google Analytics.

How do you define a domain?

Technical, Web Fonts, Show All

A domain is an identification string to address a website and consists of a top-level (‘milieugrotesque’), plus a second-level (‘.com’) = ‘milieugrotesque.com’. Our ‘Webfont Selfhosting License’ grants the use of the registered domains, including unlimited subdomains (e.g. ‘shop.milieugrotesque. com’).
Additional top-level domains (e.g. ‘milieu.com’) and/or second-level domains (e.g. ‘milieugrotesque.org’) require extra licensing.

Why do we only offer web fonts in WOFF format?

Technical, Web Fonts, Show All

Our web fonts are available in Web Open Font Format (WOFF/WOFF2), a web-specific and widely adopted format for web fonts used with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). The advantages of WOFF are: Since 2013, WOFF is supported by all major browsers (see below) and it is an open, non-copyrighted format unaffiliated with any specific company. Developed for web-use only, WOFF fonts will not work on desktop computers or with programs like Sketch, InDesign, Quark, Photoshop or Microsoft Word. Furthermore, this format enables us to incorporate a digital signature into the file/corresponding license to help us protect our copyright.

WOFF is compatible with all widely used browsers that have been updated within the last ten years. It is supported by these common browser versions: Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 3.6, Chrome 27, Safari 5.1, Opera 23, iOS Safari 7.1, Android 4.4 and Chrome for Android 37, or later.

Alternative font formats: TTF and EOT

Technical, Web Fonts, Show All

Although we take great care to provide you with suitable, up-to-date font technology that covers the widest possible range of applications, some software and technical environments require alternative formats. We offer the following formats on request for an additional fee:

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us with your specific project requirements. We will determine the best possible format to suit your needs.

May I use web fonts on a staging server?

Technical, Web Fonts, Show All

Yes. As long as your developing website is not open to the general public, you may use the fonts on a temporary, private development/staging server.

Subsetting web fonts

Technical, Web Fonts, Show All

Although our web fonts are very small files, it is sometimes crucial to optimize every bit. Most of our WOFF files are about 35kb per file, but it is possible to use subset font-files to preload for an optimized performance. These subset files contain basic characters only (e.g. no accent letters, basic punctuation, etc.) and can be shrunk to about 8kb per file.

Please contact us with your project requirements and we will do our best to meet your expectations.

Variable fonts

Technical, Show All

Variable fonts (or OpenType Font Variations) is a recently developed type technology which allows a single font file to render a great number of different styles (and design variations), using interpolation axes. This technology provides unlimited flexibility (within the font family's style parameters) by having a significantly smaller size than the total of the respective files. Currently (at this stage of development), we do not offer variable fonts officially—due to the early stages of development. Yet, provided you own a family license to one of our recently published typefaces, we may be able to supply you with a file for testing purposes.

Please contact us with your project requirements and we will do our best to meet your expectations.

Mobile app vs. desktop application

Technical, Mobile App Fonts, Show All

Mobile apps are applications that can only be installed on operating systems specifically designed for and that are running on mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, etc.

Desktop applications developed to run on operating systems specifically designed for laptop and/or desktop computers, other applications developed e.g. for specifically manufactured equipment, incl. operating systems for (mobile) devices are not considered mobile apps and are therefore not included with our Mobile App License.

Should you wish to use our fonts in a desktop application and/or in another specific technical environment, please contact us with your project details and we will offer you an appropriate solution.
