Milieu Grotesque is a Berlin-Zurich-based, independent publisher and distributor of typefaces and related publications. Set up by Timo Gaessner and Alexander Meyer, Milieu Grotesque reflects their ongoing interest and involvement with all things typographically related to work and thought.
Timo Gaessner, a Berlin-based graphic and type designer, studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. In 2002 he founded 123buero, a graphic design studio primarily focused on printed matter, identity programmes, exhibition and type design.
In 2010 he established the digital type foundry Milieu Grotesque through which all recently developed typefaces are distributed exlusively.
Since the summer of 2011, he has been a visiting lecturer at the University of Arts and Design (Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung – HfG) in Karlsruhe, south Germany.
Zurich-based graphic and type designer Alexander Meyer, studied at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). He founded his studio xyz.ch in 2003. His main focus is on typography and he is influenced by the manual aspects of old typesetting techniques. Inspired by vintage typewriter typefaces, he designed the slab serif typeface families Lacrima and Generika.
In 2010, he co-founded Milieu Grotesque.
Since 2008 he has been a visiting lecturer at F+F School of Art and Media Design (F+F Schule für Kunst und Mediendesign) in Zurich.

Their service handles all the different browser complications and is delivered quickly and reliably from their worldwide network of servers. We also provide webfonts for self-hosting on request. PLEASE NOTE: The private conversion of any of our fonts using online web font converters and use of all other webfont-related technologies — including flash embedding — are strictly prohibited. Please regard our end user license agreement (EULA) for further details.
Why are multiple licenses more expensive?
Digital typefaces or ‘fonts’ are considered software; their use —like all other software products— is subject to a licensing agreement. When you order Milieu Grotesque fonts, you are purchasing a license to use the respective typeface(s) on a predetermined number of computers within a defined legal company or institutional entity. During the online ordering process, you will be prompted to enter the desired number of computers (licenses) for your chosen font and our system will automatically calculate the corresponding license fee. If yourequire more than 25 licenses for any particular font, please contact us via email. How do I pay, what are my payment options?
We accept credit card payments and bank transfers. Our handling partner for credit card payments is PayPal. If you prefer to pay by bank transfer, we will send you an invoice via email containing all relevant information. What is OpenType?
OpenType is a cross-platform font format that allows the same font to be used with different operating systems, such as Mac and Windows. All our fonts are generally PostScript-flavoured OpenType formats. However, please contact us if you prefer TrueType or any other format.Which languages are supported?
All our fonts comprise at least a standard Western character set. Some fonts are more elaborated and support a wider range of languages. For more details, please refer to the glyph overview in the PDF type specimen downloadable at each respective font on our website.Do you offer enhancements and/or modifications?
Indeed, we do. If you have special requirements or need enhanced solutions, we will be more than happy to help. Please be aware that any modifications made to any Milieu Grotesque fonts, whether directly or via a third party, are strictly prohibited and require prior written consent from Milieu Grotesque. All modified fonts are subject to the same licensing terms and agreements as non-modified fonts. How do I install a font?
Manual installation: Please copy the font(s) into the fonts folder of your operating system (Mac: Macintosh HD / User / yourname / Library / Fonts, or Windows: c:/ windows / fonts) or use a type management tool, such as Linotype’s Font Explorer for Mac OS X or Adobe Type Manager for Windows XP/Vista to complete the installation. What is an ‘end user license agreement — EULA’?
An end user license agreement, also known as ‘EULA’, is a contract between the purchaser (you) and the licensor (us, Milieu Grotesque). The license defines ways under which the fonts can be used. Briefly: when you purchase one of our fonts, you are effectively buying the right to use this particular font, not the actual piece of software. You become a ‘licensed user’, not an ‘owner’ of the font. Milieu Grotesque fonts must not be copied, disassembled, manipulated, altered, given away, redistributed or resold. The user license only permits you to create a copy of the font for back-up purposes on non-public devices or storage systems. Users are allowed to pass on their licensed font for document output purposes to a printer, pre-press or other service facility, as long as the font is used solely for output purposes (e.g. for creating film or plates for offset printing, digital printing, plotting etc.).
If a service contractor requires the respective font for any other purpose, they will need to acquire a separate license.
By installing Milieu Grotesque fonts you automatically agree to the Milieu Grotesque end user license agreement.
